This dissertation identifies the contribution the bodily resurrection of Jesus would make to the articulation of a public theology. Having defined public theology and articulated its importance for the church's social thought and mission, the dissertation critically examines the resurrection of Jesus and concludes in favor of a transformationist interpretation. The resurrection is an act of God's love in history through which Jesus is bodily transformed. This act of transformative love inaugurates God's new creation. Transformative love and the inauguration of God's new creation of justice shape the Christian moral vision and the intentions, dispositions, and attitudes that are constitutive of such a vision. The resurrection also contributes substance to the moral life through the identification of the five values of life, justice, dignity, communion, and peace that stand at the heart of God's new creation. The dissertation concludes with an examination of how the bodily resurrection of Jesus would shape a Christian response to the question of violence.
